Plastic Bag Storage from Upcycled Tissue Boxes

Using Tissue Boxes to Store Plastic Shopping Bags

Reducing and Reusing... all in one project!

Reusing Plastic Shopping Bags

I'm not normally in the habit of photographing the areas under my sinks, but I'm willing to do it if it means helping the planet :)

While I generally try to avoid using plastic shopping bags in the first place, once in a while I'll forget my reusable collection, so I end up with a bunch of plastic bags (especially after a trip to Target). Luckily, there are so many ways to reuse plastic shopping bags; one of my favorites is as bathroom trash-can liners.

But I was having a problem with storage. Simply stashing them under the sink wasn't cutting it--it was just making a mess, and keeping them anywhere outside of the bathroom made it totally inconvenient. Then one day when I was unloading the recycling bin, I had an epiphany (yes, my epiphanies are as mundane as solutions for garbage).

I realized that an empty tissue box had the perfect form and function to store a whole bunch of plastic bags. And any normal person could simply just use a tissue box, as it is, for this easy solution, but being a DIY-er, I felt the need to complicate it by dressing it up a bit :)

I decided to recover the box with some scrapbook paper and add velcro to the bottom so that I could "hang" the box inside the cabinet and save some space. The process is pretty self-explanatory, but I'll share some of my process pictures below.

Basically I covered the box with paper and sealed it with Modge Podge.

I added a couple strips of ribbon to cover up the seams (this is totally unnecessary, BTW).

On the bottom of the box I attached 2 velcro strips (there's only one in the pic, but I realized after I hung the box that I needed another for stability). The "mates" for the velcro strips got mounted on the inside of the under-sink-cabinet.

Such an easy project idea, and it's really helped keep my bathroom area nice and organized... although I have to admit, it doesn't usually look quite as neat as this :)
